Providers we list are ones we have β€” or are seeking β€” an affiliate relationship with, so this is not a survey of the whole market. Commission never affects our editorial rankings, which are our own assessment β€” see how we rate. Trading involves significant risk of loss.

Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products carry a high risk of rapid loss. The majority of retail investor accounts lose money trading them. Futures brokers are priced by commission per contract, not spreads, so β€œpips” and β€œcommission-based” are not directly comparable β€” and a 0.0-pip raw spread never includes the commission charged on top. Minimum deposits, leverage caps, product availability and investor protection depend on the entity that serves your country, and several brokers listed do not accept clients from every jurisdiction. Our verdict on TradeStation

TradeStation is a US broker that covers listed futures alongside stocks, options, ETFs and bonds, with a desktop platform built around EasyLanguage back-testing and RadarScreen. Commissions start higher than the futures specialists here and fall with volume, so it suits traders who value research tooling and multi-asset reach more than the lowest per-contract price.

Best for

  • βœ“Traders who back-test and screen systematically and want EasyLanguage and RadarScreen built in
  • βœ“Traders wanting listed futures plus stocks and options inside one US brokerage

Look elsewhere if

  • βœ•Cost-sensitive scalpers β€” $1.75 per contract per side is well above the futures specialists here
  • βœ•Traders wanting spot crypto: TradeStation discontinued it in February 2024

Watch out:SIPC coverage applies to securities accounts only and never to futures positions, so the protection you may associate with the stock side does not extend to your ES, NQ or GC exposure. A $10 monthly inactivity fee also applies unless activity requirements are met.

Pricing and the true cost of trading

Futures start at $1.75 per contract per side and micro index futures at $0.50, both falling with volume β€” down to $0.25 per micro side at the top tier. For an intraday MES or MNQ trader that entry rate is roughly double Interactive Brokers' $0.25 and several times the $0.09 per side that NinjaTrader and Tradovate quote on their Lifetime plan. Volume tiering closes some of that gap, but only for traders already running meaningful size, so new accounts should assume the entry rate rather than the tier they hope to reach.

Cost also has a passive component here. A $10 monthly inactivity fee applies unless activity requirements are met, which is a real consideration for traders who deliberately sit out low-conviction periods or trade only around specific events. Interactive Brokers, Pepperstone and eToro charge no inactivity fee at all. If your process involves long flat stretches by design, that recurring line belongs in your comparison alongside the commission, because it is the cost you pay for doing nothing rather than for trading.

Platform, tooling and regulatory scope

The platform stack β€” TITAN X, the desktop application, web, mobile and FuturesPlus β€” is the substantive argument for TradeStation. EasyLanguage back-testing and RadarScreen let you formalise and screen a strategy rather than trade it by feel, which fits a process-driven approach to index futures. Back-testing is a research tool and not a forecast: historical behaviour of ES or GC constrains nothing about the next session, and a curve fitted to past data is easy to mistake for an edge. Treat it as a way to falsify ideas rather than validate them.

On the regulatory side, TradeStation is SEC, FINRA, CFTC and NFA registered, with non-US clients served through TradeStation International and TradeStation Europe entities. The important distinction is that SIPC covers securities accounts only and never futures, so mixing both under one login should not blur what is protected. The instrument range covers futures, futures options, stocks, options, ETFs and bonds; spot crypto was discontinued in February 2024, so crypto exposure here is not through holding the asset.

Pros

  • + Futures from $1.75 per contract per side, down to $0.50 at high volume
  • + Micro index futures at $0.50 per side ($0.25 at the top tier)
  • + Desktop platform with EasyLanguage back-testing and RadarScreen

Cons

  • βˆ’ Spot crypto was discontinued in February 2024
  • βˆ’ $10 monthly inactivity fee unless activity requirements are met
