Our verdict on Topstep
Topstep is the longest-running futures firm in this list, operating since 2012 with a single-phase Trading Combine from $49 on the 50K account and a 90% split. It is a reasonable place to learn what a rules-based evaluation demands, provided you accept a 150K ceiling on a single account and that the fee buys an attempt, not an outcome.
Best for
- βTraders testing a futures process for the first time who want documented, stable rules
- βTraders who want the lowest entry cost in this group at $49 for the 50K Combine
Look elsewhere if
- βTraders who need more than 150K on a single account β Apex reaches 300K
- βTraders wanting forex or stock CFDs; this is a futures-only firm
Watch out:The Combine is a simulated evaluation with a non-refundable fee, and most participants do not reach a funded payout. Budget the fee as a cost you may not recover, and note that Express accounts apply per-payout caps on what you can withdraw at a time.
Cost of the attempt, and what the fee buys
The 50K Combine starts at $49, the lowest entry in this group alongside MyFundedFutures at around $77 a month and Alpha Futures at $79. That fee purchases an attempt at a simulated evaluation under a defined rule set, not access to capital. It is non-refundable, failure rates across the prop-evaluation model are high, and a trader who resets repeatedly can spend several times the headline figure before reaching a payout β or without reaching one at all. Track cumulative spend from the first attempt rather than per attempt.
Set against funding your own futures account, the comparison is not simply cheaper versus more expensive. A $49 Combine risks $49 and offers no ownership of results until rules are satisfied and a payout is approved. Opening a futures account at Interactive Brokers, AMP or Tradovate risks your own capital but every dollar of any gain is yours, with no rule set that can end participation β though unlike a challenge fee, a leveraged futures loss is not capped at what you paid to start. Neither route makes trading profitable; they distribute risk, cost and control differently, and that is the actual decision.
Payout mechanics and platform access
Payout cycles run at roughly five-day intervals with a 90% split to the trader, and Topstep's documentation of its rules is one of the clearer examples in this space β which matters, because in evaluation programmes it is usually a rule breach rather than a losing trade that ends an account. Express accounts apply per-payout caps, meaning approved profit may be released in instalments rather than as a lump sum. Read the specific caps for the account type you buy, since they change what your realistic monthly withdrawal looks like.
Platform access covers TSTrader, NinjaTrader, Tradovate, TradingView and Quantower, which lines up with the ES, NQ, YM, GC and crypto futures products most readers here trade. Because NinjaTrader and Tradovate front ends appear across almost every firm in this group, the platform is rarely the deciding factor β rules, payout mechanics and firm longevity are. On longevity, operating since 2012 gives Topstep a materially longer record than Tradeify (2024), Alpha Futures (2024) or Lucid Trading (2025).

- + Low $49 entry for the 50K Combine
